Thanksgiving!

Fall is now officially over (even though it really doesn't feel like it as we haven't had any snow to speak of yet...)

Ja la vai o Outono, o Inverno veio para ficar (embora n pareca nada sem neve no chao...)

...but before it left for good, we had a chance to enjoy an amazing ice cream staple in Greenwood - Mrs. Curl. This was the last day it was open for the season...but we were super bummed that we hadn't found it earlier...this place has the MOST amazing homemade curly fries and ice cream we had ever tasted! We are already counting down the days until it opens in March!

No entanto, antes de dizermos adeus ao Outono, tivemos a oportunidade de disfrutar da loja de gelados da Sra. Curl. Sem duvida um dos melhores gelados que ja comemos, mas ainda melhor -- as melhores batatas fritas encaracoladas caseiras:) Estamos a contar os dias para a re-abertura em Marco!

It has become a sort of tradition in the Baltazar household to make grape juice in the fall...but this year the mix of grapes we used didn't taste as good as we had expected, so we made the juice into jelly instead (which actually is GREAT and lasts longer...so woohoo!!)

entretanto, como ja comeca a ser tradicao, fizemos sumo de uva... mas como n gostamos da mistura das uvas, acabou por se tornar em compota (que ate ficou mt boa, e dura mais tempo! ;).

One of the many great things about Indianapolis is that it has cheap hockey, which we love! We two and Amber headed down to an Indiana Ice game a few Saturday nights ago to watch them play against the Muskegon Lumber Jacks. We had great seats and had a lot of fun....

Uma das vantagens de viver em Indianapolis e hoquei barato! O nome da equipa e os Indiana Ice, e fomos ve-los jogar num destes Sabados a noite contra os Muskegon Lumber Jacks, e embora os Ice tenham perdido o jogo, nos divertimo-nos bastante.

This Thanksgiving, we decided to buck up and actually run in the YMCA Buffalo Turkey Trot with Sarah and Chris (since we have wussed out on it the last few years!). Here are some of the 13,000 runners that we joined to run the 8K through Buffalo, New York, after driving for 9 hours, arriving at 3:00am, and then getting up to run at 7:00am...we were a bit beat afterwards! However, it was a lot of fun running in the oldest race in the US (it was 116 years old this year!) and we were glad we did it!

E aqui estamos (detras da camara) em Buffalo, Nova Yorque para celebrar o dia de accao de gracas com a familia. Depois de conduzir 9 horas e termos chegado as 3 da manha, levantamos as 7 para correr 8kms com outras 13.000 pessoas na corrida mais antiga dos Estados Unidos (116 anos)!

and here we are at the end...cold, tired, but happy we all finished strong! :)

Fall, football, and Apples

Ahh...autumn in Indiana! we decided to celebrate fall's arrival a few weeks ago by heading down to Brown County State Park to enjoy the ONE weekend of gorgeous colorful trees while the leaves are still red, yellow, green and orange and actually still on the trees (those who live in the north...you know what we mean. why is it that fall is so short, anyways?). here are some of the shots...

Outono em Indiana! Para celebrar a chegada do outono ha umas semanas atras fomos ate ao Brown County State Park, onde disfrutamos das cores fantasticas nas arvores, vermelhos, amarelos, verdes e laranjas. pelo menos enquanto as folhas estavam nas arvores, o que por estes lados n dura muito tempo! aqui vao algumas das fotos...

the next day we went to our very first Colts game (carolyn's very first football game, period!). it was certainly an interesting experience! first there is a full pat down for every person who enters the stadium (right after they have searched everything you own, of course), next you have to decline about a thousand offers of "ice cold bud light", and then you have to try to find your seat in a maze of blue colts gear and escalators that seem to be forever going up.
we finally managed to find the seats (which afforded us a great view of the field and helped carolyn actually learn the gist of football!), watch a good game (even though they lost...and still haven't won so we don't feel too bad), and have a great time! thanks amber for spending all that time on ebay finding those tickets!

e no dia seguinte fomos ver um jogo dos Colts, a equipa de futebol americano professional onde vivemos. Quando chegamos ao estadio tivemos que nos submeter a tipica revista, e tivemos que recusar inumeras ofertas da tal cerveja fresquinha. depois de umas quantas, quase interminaveis, escadas rolantes, la chegamos ao topo, num mar de camisolas azuis. Foi o primeiro jogo no qual eles estiveram perto de ganhar, mas perderam outra vez. De qualquer modo foi um jogo divertido, obrigado a Amber por procurar e finalmente encontrar bilhetes baratos no ebay!

e aqui estamos, vestidos com as t-shirts que tivemos de ir comprar na noite anterior ao super mercado! esta e a vista da janela lateral do estadio, a cidade de indianapolis! Clima perfeito para um jogo de futebol com as janelas e o tecto do estadio abertos.

a few weeks later, we went back to Berrien for me to take my EdS comprehensive exams. it was quite a full weekend - filled with seeing all of our awesome friends! we also got the chance to get together with Dana, once of Carolyn's friends from Union. we stayed at one of the most peaceful places - auntie betty's house on the lake! we just love it there! we also spent some time picking up some michigan delicacies that for some odd reason don't make it down three hours south...

entretanto voltamos a Berrien Springs porque eu tinha exames compreensivos. Enquanto la estivemos vimos bastantes amigos, incluindo a Dana, uma amiga da Carolyn da universidade onde ela estudou. passamos o fds na casa da tia Betty, ela tem uma casa num sitio bastante pacifico junto a um lago. tambem passamos algum tempo a apanhar fruta de Michigan, que por alguma razao nunca ca chega mais a sul, ainda que sejam apenas tres horas de distancia.

we thoroughly enjoyed auntie betty's backyard, the lake, and the many birds that come and visit her bird feeders. its always amazing the things we see at her house - turkeys, geese, rabbits, a fox - we even once saw 13 deer by the side of the road! early morning is the best time to just walk around the property - you feel like you are thousands of miles away from anyone else.

nos bem disfrutamos do "quintal" da tia betty, do lago, e dos muitos passaros que vem visitar os alimentadores que ela tem ao redor da casa. E sempre fantastico ver todos os animais selvagens que por la passam, perus, gansos, coelhos, uma raposa - uma vez ate vimos 13 veados mesmo ao lado do caminho!

so here goes a brief summary of the last few weeks here in greenwood, indiana :) the above photo and the next few photos show part of a series of platters Carolyn created, called "Gratitude". I think its a nice thought to start out this blog on - as we have both been greatly blessed and are so grateful that God has been leading and guiding us since we moved here!

Aqui vai um breve sumario das ultimas semanas:) Aqui estao algumas fotos da uma serie de travessas que a Carolyn criou, a serie chama-se "Gratidao" e foram presentes que demos a alguns dos nossos amigos antes de sairmos de Berrien Springs. Parece-me um inicio apropriado ja que temos sido tao abencoados desde que aqui chegamos, e estamos agradecidos pela forma como Deus nos tem conduzido nestes ultimos meses.

mailboxes in berrien :) there was some construction on some of the main roads, so the mailboxes were all uprooted and relocated at the park...very odd...

uma serie de caixas do correio em Berrien:) havia construccao em algumas das ruas principais, e entao as caixas do correio foram todas recolocadas no parque, ate as obras estarem completas.

hmm...just one of those random truck advertisements that just leaves you speechless...oh the art...!

e este e um daqueles anuncios de publicidade que nos deixam sem palavras...

in August, we checked out the Broad Ripple Farmers market. here is one of our delicious food findings - grilled pizza!! :) delicious!!

a passear pelo mercado em Broad Ripple, um bairro no norte de indianapolis. aqui foi onde fizemos um achado gastronomico, uma deliciosa pizza grelhada!

so delicious in fact that Carolyn decided to replicate it the next day at home - pretty amazing I would say! :)

e aqui a versao fantastica que a Carolyn fez em casa, no dia seguinte! :)

so randomly I decided I wanted to teach myself to cook. here am I making "creamy pesto pasta"! the only problem was that I used soy milk instead of regular milk, which made the pasta taste like sweet soup...!!! well...at least it lasted for a whole week (seeing as I made the entire box of pasta)!

e como eu decidi comecar a cozinhar, aqui esta a pasta que deveria ter sido pasta cremosa com pesto, so que eu fiz o molho de pesto com leite de soja em vez de usar leite normal, o que resultou em pasta a saber a sopa doce.. e restou uma semana inteira (poque eu utilizei uma caixa inteira de esparguete)!

while Carolyn was looking for a job, she made pies to entertain herself! lots and lots of delicious pies! :) here are a couple of the personal pies in a jar she made. i miss these little guys...hmm...maybe she shouldn't have started working again after all :)

e enquanto a Carolyn esperava saber noticias do trabalho, ela fez tartes para se entreter, montes de deliciosas tartes. Aqui estao duas das tartes, neste caso tartes num frasco, em doses individuais. Talvez ela n devesse ter voltado a trabalhar ;)

we have finally started exercising again! here is a sunflower field we found during one of our rides. of course Carolyn loved it and needed a picture taken there! :)

entretanto voltamos a andar de bicicleta e a correr. durante uma das nossas saidas encontramos este campo de girassois, e e claro que a Carolyn tinha que tirar uma foto com eles! :)

one Friday evening tinkering around with (and eventually fixing) Cecil's old camera...the lens had fallen off, but after a couple of hours it was back and fully operational! (or so i think, I haven't actually tried it yet) :)

numa destas sexta-feiras a noite, aqui estou eu a arranjar uma maquina fotografica... a lente tinha caido. levou algumas horas mas ficou pronta a funcionar, ou pelo menos parece, ainda n a experimentei:)

and now for a short flower close-up break...

um intervalo com algumas macros de flores...

working with kids (and their GERMS) has been getting the two of us sick more than usual, so during one of the weekends when had to stay in, we took a few pictures and portraits!

trabalhar com criancas (e com os seus germes) tem feito com que fiquemos doentes com muito mais frequencia que e habitual. num dos fins-de-semana que tivemos que ficar por casa, tiramos algumas fotos e retratos

one Saturday night in August we went up to north indy to see the Feast of Lanterns, a small yet quaint art fair, and Amber came with us! there's so much to do around here - we just love it! this also was a great opportunity for some very interesting street shots...

num dos sabados a noite fomos ate ao norte de indianapolis para ver o festival das lanternas, uma pequena feira de arte, e a Amber, uma amiga da Carolyn, veio connosco. E fantastico o numero de eventos que existem aqui, esta foi tb uma boa oportunidade para tirar umas fotos de rua...

apparently some people felt like they needed to bring their own lanterns...

there was a tent that had lanterns up for auction - this one caused all kinds of concerned comments...

numa das tendas havia um leilao para vender lanternas, esta foi uma das que mais comentarios causou...

later when it got dark, hundreds of the lanterns were lit to illuminate the park - it was beautiful :)

e assim que ficou escuro, centenas de lanternas foram acesas para iluminar o parque - mt bonito :)

we finally started decorating our apartment! one of the ideas was to paint a chalkboard section on our wall, so here it is! sometime soon I hope to create a magnetic wall section too

comecamos a decorar o nosso apartamento, uma das ideas era pintar uma parte da parede com tinta de quadro de giz, e aqui esta. dentro em breve vou criar uma parte da parede que vai ser magnetica, para colocarmos fotos e pinturas com imans

e aqui estamos nos numa feira de actividades ao ar livre onde haviam todo o tipo de ateliers, desde como descobrir ouro num rio, ate a como construir fogos e cozinhar num ambiente selvagem, desde passeios a cavalo, ate a como esculpir madeira... de tudo um pouco, e tudo gratis!

when it came time for Carolyn to shoot the cross bow, she told the instructor that she didn't want to kill the deer (which was the blue target in the picture) - he asked "whys ever nawt?" - "because I'm a vegetarian!" she said. "well...deer shore don't taste like no veegebles...thats for shore" he answered! so he let her shoot the bee target instead. apparently she is willing to shoot bees over deer....hmm....

quando chegou a vez da Carolyn disparar a besta, ela disse ao instructor que n queria matar o veado (o alvo azul na foto). Ele perguntou, "e porque nao?" - "porque sou vegetariana!", disse ela. e ele disse "pois, veado n sabe nada que se pareca a vegetais... isso e de certeza!" e ele la lhe deixou disparar ao alvo com as abelhas. aparentemente ela n se importa de matar abelhas...hmmm....

n faco idea como se traduz isto... e um atrelado em forma de lagrima, ou gota de agua:) e um estilo de atrelado que algumas pessoas aqui constroem para ir acampar, talvez um dia construa um:)

Carolyn sculpting a really cool looking elephant out of soap! the guys who were demonstrating the workshop for the kids thought she was nuts to want to carve an elephant out of a little bar of soap, but she proved that she could do it! who knew she was also a skilled woodcarver? the guys even told her when she was finished that she should look up the local woodcarving group and join them!

A Carolyn a esculpir um elefante fantastico a partir de um sabao! os senhores que estavam a fazer a demonstracao para as criancas n acreditaram que ela queria fazer um elefante apenas duma metade de um sabao, mas ela provou que podia ser feito, quem diria que ela era tao habilidosa a esculpir? no fim os senhores ate lhe disseram que ela devia procurar um grupo de escultores local:)

yay! Lubi and Eike came to visit too! can you believe our guests just draw all over our walls!? :) we just love that!

Farewell Berrien Springs...

so heres some outdated news, a summary from our last days in Berrien, and of our first days in Indy. (text mostly by Carolyn:))

Ca vao noticias deste lado, ja um pouco desactualizadas, mas antes tarde que nunca. um resumo dos nossos ultimos dias em Berrien Springs, e um pouco da mudanca.

in june, we surprised auntie betty for her 80th birthday. auntie betty has been a huge part of our lives in berrien. she helped us out in so many ways - from finding a washer and dryer for us, bringing us food and fresh produce, and always having a cup of tea ready for us when we came to visit! we had a great evening chatting and eating cake with her!

aqui foi no 80 aniversario da tia Betty (a senhora que nos deu as maquinas de lavar e de secar, alem de nos trazer vegetais e fruta de vez em quando, e ter sempre cha pronto para nos quando a visitavamos). fizemos-lhe uma surpresa e passamos la o fim-da-tarde.

over a year ago I took a few pictures at this old gas station, so before leaving I went back to give the owners a couple of portraits I had taken of them. Their son was more interested in knowing if I had been the guy taking pictures of a naked girl out in the back...i think that he was rather disappointed when he saw all I had was pictures of his parent's faces!

a mais de um ano tinha ido tirar fotos numa bomba de gasolina das antigas, e antes de nos virmos embora fui la levar-lhes alguns do retratos que tinha tirado dos donos -- este e o jipe de servico deles:) O filho deles estava com esperanca que eu tivesse sido o fotografo que la tinha estado a tirar fotos de uma mulher nua, n foi o desapontamento qd viu que as fotos que eu trazia era dos pais dele!

Cecil and I when we were loading a small trailer to take the first batch of our belongings to go to Indianapolis. we decided to spend the weekend in Indy since we had to go down to sign the lease and get the keys for our new apartment. turns out that after we loaded the trailer, we had no idea how heavy it was, so we took it to a truck weight station. found out that the trailer was far too heavy (for a trailer without brakes) for our car to pull, so we had to unload it and load it again (a couple...three...four...times) until it was a little safer to drive...not by much though! :)

e aqui a carregar um atrelado com alguma da nossa mobilia. depois de acabarmos de ter carregado o atrelado descobrimos que estava demasiado pesado para puxar com o nosso carro (pq o atrelado n tinha travoes) e ent tivemos de tirar tudo para fora, e voltar a carregar apenas com mobilia e as coisas mais leves. no dia seguinte fomos passar o fds a indy para assinar o contrato e receber as chaves do apartamento.

So a couple of weekends ago we went up to Toronto to visit Carolyn's cousin Heather, to take a few (hopefully) interesting street photos, and to go see see the sights, as it was Doors Open and tons of buildings were open for public to visit. We started with a visit to the Royal Ontario Museum, which is one of the best museums I have been too! They had an awesome mineral and dinosaurs collection, along with lots of other nifty things like samurai sabres and all kinds of asian pottery. (language improvements and girly remarks by Carolyn ;) )

Ha umas semanas atras fomos ate Toronto para visitar a Heather, prima da Carolyn, para tentar tirar algumas fotos, e como era Doors Open -- para ver as vistas (Durante este evento, a cidade abre varios edificios que normalmente estao fechados ao publico). A nossa visita comecou no museu Royal Ontario, que e um dos melhores museus que ja visitei. eles tem uma coleccao fantastica de minerais e dinosauros, e outras coisas interessantes como sabres de samurai e inumeros tipos de olaria japonesa, entre muitas outras coisas...

At the Thomas Fisher Rare Book Library they had an english Bible collection, which even featured a few Bibles from before the KJV came along - these are a few of the Bibles displayed. there were also some greek, hebrew, and latin Bibles displayed, a few with amazing illustrations.

Tulip Festival 2011

so a couple weeks ago we finally went to the Tulip Festival in Holland, Michigan. consider yourself warned, this is a very cheesy post, it largely features a pretty girl, which happens to be my wife, and tulips, so pretty cliche indeed. but before, I got to try the g12 for street photoging, which surprised me, the g is much faster than I would expect, and the 28mm lens did pretty well compared to the fisheye. most pictures are hipshots, which reduces the lag/slowness caused caused by looking at the screen. anyways, here goes...

ha umas semanas atras fomos ao festival das tulipas na Holanda, Michigan. este post esta longe de ser original, basicamente uma menina bonita, a qual e a minha esposa, e tulipas, mesmo nada original. antes das fotos, tive finalmente a oportunidade de experimental a g12 na para fotos de rua, a qual me surpreendeu pela positiva - e bastante mais rapida do que esperei e a lente (28mm) e uma boa alternativa a usar a DSLR com a fisheye. a maior parte das fotos sao "hipshots" o que ajudou a reduzir a lentidao de usar o ecra da camara. enfim, aqui vao as fotos...

Cyanotype, Tea and Coffee Toning

so I decided to try cyanotype prints. To start with, I bought a kit from this place: here

The directions are straightforward and preparing the chemistry is relatively easy, as long as there is enough ventilation. once the sensitizer was ready, I let it sit and "age" for a few weeks, and since this was my first time, I used watercolor paper as the base. To coat the paper I used around 1.5 to 2 ml of sensitizer. After printing a couple of transparencies, I exposed the sensitized paper in the sun. The best exposure I got was at 3:15 minutes.

decidi tentar cianotipo, um processo atraves do qual se fazem impressoes em tons de azul, em vez do tipico preto e branco. comprei um kit aqui, preparei os quimicos, o que foi relativamente facil, e como era a minha primeira vez, usei papel de aguarela para pintar a emulsao. depois de deixar a emulsao envelhecer durante algumas semanas, pintei-a no papel, deixei secar, e fiz as primeiras exposicoes ao sol. a quantidade de emulsao que funcionou para mim andou a volta de 1,5-2 ml, e a melhor exposicao que fiz foi a volta de 3:15 minutos.

and this is the print after the 3:15 minute exposure, developed in tap water for approximately 3 minutes, and washed for approximately 20 minutes.

this was my second best print, and as it was a bit overexposed, I used it along with other prints to test tea and coffee toning.

esta foi a segunda melhor exposicao, um pouco sobreexposta, a qual usei, com outras duas fotos, para testar colorir fotos com cha e cafe.

here is part of the set up, on the left tray I have TSP, which I used to bleach the prints before toning. to make the TSP I added a tablespoon of powder to a quart of warm water. on the other tray I had fresh tea for the toning (six bags of herbal tea).

aqui esta parte do processo, no tabuleiro da esquerda tinha uma substancia chamada TSP (trisodio fosfato) que actua como lixivia. no tabuleiro da direita estava uma mistura de chas de ervas, seis sacos de cha.

this was an afterthought, since tea was not toning as well as I had desired, I decided to try coffee. results below...

this print was incredibly overexposed (9 minutes in the sun), so I was amazed as to how much detail came out when I bleached it, the hair was solid blue before, and there was no detail anywhere in the picture.

esta foto tinha ficado extremamente sobreexposta (exposicao de 9 minutos), n se via detalhe nenhum, era apenas uma massa de azul. depois de passar pela lixivia foi este o resultado, fiquei bastante impressionado com o nivel de detalhe que voltou com a lixivia.

this is the tea toned print. I like the pink/blue hues, looks rather vintage, however I wish it was a bit more saturated, I may have bleached for too long.

esta foi a foto colorida no cha, parece bastante antiga, e embora eu goste dos tons de rosa e azul, ficou mais palida do que aquilo que eu queria, preferiria ter um pouco mais de saturacao, mas enfim, talvez tenha ficado na lixivia demasiado tempo.

and this is the coffee toned print. I am not a big fan of this one, however the added graininess is pretty cool, other than that I think I toned it for too long:)

e esta foi a foto que colori no cafe. n gosto muito desta, provavelmente vai acabar na lixivia outra vez, mas por outro lado gosto do grao causado pelo cafe. tb ficou mais escura do que aquilo que eu pretendia, ficou demasiado tempo no cafe:)

So a friend of mine told me about this abandoned house on campus, which I visited after my last final. it was actually the first time an abandoned house scared me, which happened when I walked into the room on the 5th photo below -- rather creepy and unexpected...

so we went to the Passion Play here at Andrews -- here are some pictures, all shot with the 20d and lensbaby original.

nos fomos a uma especie de teatro de rua de Pascoa que por aqui se faz, e uma tradicao anual por todos os EUA. as fotos neste post foram todas tiradas com a 20d e uma lensbaby original.

So once in a while I carry a Voigtlander Brillant with me (pseudo-tlr from the 40's). these photos were taken with a canon g12 shooting through the voigtlander (TTV). the photos were later processed in color efex pro, using a Kodachrome preset.

Sledding, Old Film, and a Lost Camera

so, winter is leaving! snow is melting and we had sun for four straight days:) we even got up to the 50's.. so in celebration, here are some pictures from the blizzard we had a few weeks ago. we also went sledding that day. the first two frames are fruit of the new g12, the majority of the frames were processed on either color efex pro or silver efex pro (provia 400 and tri-x 400)

o inverno esta a despedir-se! a neve esta a derreter e tivemos sol quatro dias seguidos:) ate chegamos aos 10 graus! em celebracao, ca vao algumas fotos da tempestade de neve que tivemos ha umas semanas atras. as duas primeiras fotos foram tiradas com a nova g12, e a maioria das fotos passaram pelo color efex pro ou pelo silver efex pro (provia 400 and tri-x 400)

on another topic, I started developing color film at home, which is rather smelly and toxic, but fun nonetheless. So I finally developed film I had in a drawer since 2007 and 2008. the next shots were taken using a Holga, which I customized to use 35mm as well, as you will see further down (the double exposures).

these two next frames were taken during our first year at Berrien Springs, we used a Voigtlander Brillant, pretend-TLR from the 1930's.

as proximas duas fotos foram tiradas durante o nosso primeiro ano em Berrien Springs, usando uma Voigtlander Brillant, uma especie TLR dos anos 30.

and lastly... a couple of years ago I bought a brownie fiesta at the antiques on the bluff market in St. Joseph. to my surprise, there was still film in the camera (127mm). I developed and scanned it, and these were the only frames that were correctly exposed. anyone know these people by any chance?

e por fim... ha uns dois anos comprei uma brownie fiesta num mercado de antiguidades em st. joseph. para minha surpresa, a camera ainda tinha um rolo (127mm). por fim revelei e digitalizei o rolo, mas estas tres fotos eram as unicas que tinham sido correctamente expostas.

a small series on plants and flowers that I shot while in Portugal. most were shot with a lens I sorta put together: I combined a 50mm 1.8 with a large loupe (glass lens) to enlarge the subject, and to dramatically decrease the depth of field. the other shots were made with a 24mm 2.8. the first part in bw was processed in Silver Efex Pro, using Tri-X 400 as a base. The color photos were processed through Color Efex Pro, using the Kodachrome 64 pro preset as a base. enjoy!

uma pequena serie de flores e plantas que fiz qd estive em Portugal. a maior parte das fotos foram tiradas com uma combinacao de lentes: uma 50mm 1.8 com uma lupa grande (lente de vidro) sobreposta -- o objectivo era aumentar a imagem e diminuir drasticamente a profundidade de campo. as outras fotos foram tiradas com a 24 2.8. as fotos a pb passaram primeiro pelo Silver Efex Pro, no qual apliquei uma base Tri-X 400. as fotos a cores passaram pelo Color Efex Pro, usando kodachrome 64 pro como base. espero que gostem!

Before the end of the year, we had a skit at our youth sabbath school about the stations of the Cross. Each station was performed for a few seconds, after which a question was displayed on the screen for people to reflect on

antes do fim do ano, fizemos um programa especial com o grupo de jovens sobre as estacoes da cruz. durante alguns segundos representamos cada episodio, e depois em cada intervalo, uma pergunta para reflexao aparecia no ecra.

that afternoon we went back in time to the day Jesus was born. we participated in the Holy Walk, somewhere in Indiana. we were guided by a guy who lumped our sabbath school group with an Amish family as one single family coming from Cesarea to Bethlehem for the census. We were fruit farmers, and through the walk we were yelled at by roman soldiers, bargained with the people selling goods at Bethlehem, and finally, saw Jesus in the manger. we also got really cold, but at the end there was free hot chocolate and cookies. the Amish family was awesome:) the manger was the only place with enough light for pictures (even for my tri-x +3)

naquela mesma tarde fomos ate ao estado de Indiana para participar na Holy Walk. E um programa que fazem todos os anos no Natal. ja pela noite, fomos levados para um campo, e depois de juntos com um grupo de Amish, disseram-nos que eramos um grupo de camponeses que tinham arvores de fruto, que viviamos em cesarea, e que vinhamos de viagem a Belem para participarmos no censo. o nosso guia levou-nos pelo caminho onde guardas romanos gritaram connosco, negociamos com comerciantes em Belem para comprar comida mais barata, e finalmente chegamos a manjedoura onde estava Jesus. foi um programa fantastico, todo ao ar livre, o que nos deixou bastante frios -- mas pelo menos no final deram-nos chocolate quente e bolachas. A familia Amish era fantastica e foram uma excelente companhia.

anyways, finals week came, and so did the snow. future posts will show that the snow height has became three or four times higher than this.

entretanto chegou a semana dos exames finais, e com os exames chegou a neve. neste momento, temos tres ou quatro vezes mais neve do que se ve nestas fotos.

and the final big news just before we left to Portugal -- baby Isaac was born! Jackie and Seth are our upstairs neighbors and they had a baby boy during finals week.

e as maiores noticias que tivemos mesmo antes de voarmos para Portugal foi que os nossos vizinhos de cima, Jackie e Seth, tinham dado a luz. o bebe chama-se Isaac, esta cada vez maior e tem montes de cabelo!

Leia isn't too happy about the new arrival. While she's very protective, she is also a little jealous.

and so we left... after a flight cancelled, another one 4 hours late, we finally made it to Lisbon, just in time to avoid all the major crisis at most airports in Europe and US. (for the next photos I used mostly 24mm 2.8 and a 50mm 1.8 lenses. Later on I used the stock lens (18-55) with a fisheye adaptor; bw editing and toning was done with silver efex pro, which is awesome for bw. just got the color efex pro to test the color film simulator!)

e la saimos do pais do gelo... depois de um voo cancelado, outro a sair com 4 horas de atraso, la chegamos a Lisboa, mesmo a tempo de evitar a crise climaterica que se viveu nas semanas seguintes na europa e eua. (as proximas fotos foram tiradas na grande maioria com uma lente 24 2.8 e uma 50 1.8. mais adiante usei uma lente stock 18-55 com um adaptador olho-de-peixe. a edicao em preto e branco bem como as tonalidades foram feitas com o silver efex pro, que e fantastico para p&b. entretanto arranjei tb o color efex pro para testar o simulador the rolos a cores!)

and this is my favorite part... a giant squid -- this one measured around 43ft (13 mt).

the following day, I was at the hospital to part ways with my beloved cyst, which inhabitted my head for several years, where it gained the nickname of little horn while I studied theology.

No dia seguinte foi o dia de dizer adeus ao meu amigo ja de ha muitos anos. apelidado de corno pequeno enquanto estudei Teologia, o meu quisto teve de ser retirado.

six stiches later, the doctor let me keep it, which to my surprise, fascinated Carolyn.

depois de seis pontos, a doctora deixou-me trazer o quisto para casa como recordacao, para minha supresa, a Carolyn ficou fascinada com o quisto.

as soon as we got home, she dissected it. there are many more images, but I feared they would be a little too graphic for more sensitive eyes. Let's just say inside it was just like a very big zit.

Assim que chegamos a casa, ela dissecou o quisto. ha muitas mais fotos, mas por medo a ferir alguma susceptibilidade, eu decidi n as colocar. imaginem uma grande borbulha a ser expremida, e o mesmo!

on a totally different topic, I finally learned to cook one of my favorite foods that my grandma makes - rissois de noz - all from scratch accompanied by tomato rice, and then learned a couple more rice variants from my mom, pretty delicious!

e finalmente la comecei a aprender a cozinhar. comecei com rissois de noz e arroz de tomate, umas das minhas refeicoes favoritas. aqui esta a minha avo a ensinar-me o que fazer. mais tarde a minha mae ensinou-me mais umas variantes de arroz, delicioso:)

on our way to Lisbon we saw this amazing scene. horses standing in the water as the sun is still rising. these were the best frames I got. the best one I got had a electricity pole right in the middle.. little things that are hard to see when the train doesn't stop for you to shoot.

and so arrived Christmas. As always we split time between the two families. opened presents on the 24th :) and enjoyed time with each other.

here it is. So I decided to approach the sheep slowly while taking pictures. after 10 minutes, I finally made it to the sheep and held the lamb.

after that, the mom started looking at me like this, so I was pretty sure I was going to get hit sometime soon.

Ines came and held the lamb herself. That didnt make the mom feel any better.

one other day we went to see some horses, and here is our friend preparing one of their horses for us to ride.

um outro dia fomos ver uma cavalarica onde um amigo tem cavalos. ele preparou um cavalo para que nos pudessemos montar por alguns minutos.

turns out some clients had arrived to see some horses so we didnt have much time... which consisted of going around in circles twice:)

entretanto chegaram uns clientes para ver alguns cavalos, o que fez que n tivessemos muito tempo para montar, e so deu para dar umas poucas voltas. de qq modo foi mt bom!

and then my parents befriended this guy who works there at the zoo. He lets us get closer to the pigmy hippopotamus, and then took us to see the the baby rhinoceros

e depois os meus pais fizeram amizade com este senhor que trabalha no zoo. ele deixou-nos aproximar dos hipopotamos pigmeus, e depois levou-nos a ver o bebe rinoceronte

and then there was this evil-tempered pigmy goat who started chasing the sheep, and hitting her in the butt with her horns! it went on forever too..

esta cabra-ana era um espectaculo! comecou a perseguir a mesma ovelha ao circulos. sempre que a ovelha corria mais devagar, a cabra dava-lhe com os chifres no traseiro, as duas ficaram a dar voltas por bastante tempo!

later we came to the meerkat site. there was only a short glass panel, so I was able to stick my arm inside and since I had the fisheye, I let them come close and touch the lens. they were really curious, and came all over the camera instead of just running away

mais tarde chegamos a seccao dos suricatas. a parte onde eles estavam so tinha uma pequena proteccao de vidro, o que foi excelente para la meter o braco e tirar fotos com a olho-de-peixe. em vez de fugirem, os suricatas aproximaram-se cada vez mais e comecaram a brincar com a lente.

and finally we made it to the last baboon's cage. besides saying "do not feed the animals" there was also a sign that said "we do not take responsibility for any stolen belongings by the monkeys" and that is because the babies come out of the cages, which I later explained to Carolyn, it is normal, it's actually a tradition -- one of my classmates in elementary school got his lunch stolen!

e finalmente chegamos a jaula dos babuinos. alem de avisar que os macacos n poder ser alimentados, tb havia um sinal a dizer que o zoo n se responsabiliza por coisas que os macacos roubem dos visitantes. eu expliquei a Carolyn que isto e normal, tradicao quase, e que os bebes saem sempre das jaulas. tb lhe contei que um dia numa visita de estudo no tempo da escola primaria, um dos meus colegas perdeu o saco do almoco pq um macaco lhe tinha roubado!

winter is here, and so is lots of snow! these pictures are from the days right before the snow... for the photogs out there. most pictures were taken with a 24/2.8 (which I am loving) and processed with Silver efex pro, which mimics perfectly Tri-x 400!

this is the school I am currently working at for one of my classes -- developing a reading project with 3rd grade students.

Esta e a escola onde estou a trabalhar para umas das minhas disciplinas. estou a desenvolver um projecto de leitura com alunos da 3a classe.

so... it has been a long time since the last post! here's a brief update:)

we did what must have been the fastest visit to NY city someone has ever done.

we had to go there for me to get my passport renewed at the Portuguese consulate, so we drove all night (12hrs), we slept for three hours mid-trip, and finally arrived to fifth avenue around 9am. After parking the car, taking care of all the paperwork did not take more than an hour, and I did receive my passport the next week!

no street pictures this time because I was shooting film, so developed photos will show up some day:)

hum, depois de tanto tempo sem colocar nada aqui, ca vao algumas novidades (sem acentos, tils ou nada que se assemelhe, este teclado n os tem!:)

tinhamos que ir a nova iorque, a cidade, para renovar o meu passaporte no consulado portugues. viajamos toda a noite (12 horas), paramos a meio caminho para dormir 3 horas, e voltamos a estrada, chegando a quinta avenida, manhattan, as 9 da manha.

depois de estacionarmos, tratamos de todos os papeis em cerca de uma hora, e recebi o meu passaporte na semana seguinte!

na ha fotos de rua desta vez porque eu estava a usar rolo em vez de digital, pelo que fotos virao mais tarde:)

after all paperwork, first stop at Dean&Deluca just across the street for some warm food, if you dont understand why DD is such a big deal, ask Carolyn sometime:)

depois da burocracia, atravessamos a rua para comer algo quente, no Dean&Deluca, um dos sitios preferidos da Carolyn:)

here we are in Times Square, along with dozens of turists, I dont think I had ever heard so many different languages in the same place!

Aqui estamos nos em Times Square, com mais umas centenas de turistas, acho que ouvi mais linguas no tempo que aqui estivemos do que em toda a minha vida!

after walking 10 (big) blocks to go see the m9. in the corner you can see Federico, and this is how the conversation went:

Tiago: hi, do you have leica rangefinders I can take a look at?

Federico: yes, we have the m9

T: can I see it?

F: a real one?

T: yes... (after all I did just walk 10 blocks)

F: *sighs wait a minute, I'll be right back...

After 2-3 minutes, he finally arrives with a key, opens the display and pulls it out. and then I played with it! pretty fun, Federico, not as amused! (the combo in my hands is probably worth around 9-10 thousand dollars)

Tiago: hey, tem alguma leica rangefinder que eu possa ver?

Federico: sim, temos a m9

T: posso ve-la?

F: uma verdadeira?

T: ...sim (acabamos de caminhar 10 quarteiroes!)

F: *suspiro - espere um minuto...

Depois de 2-3 minutos, ele finalmente voltou com uma chave, abriu a vitrine, e trouxe a camara, e depois eu brinquei com ela! O federico nao achou tanta piada:) (o combo na minha mao custa a volta de uns 9-10 mil dolares)

After walking around, some sightseeing, and traveling on a yellow taxi with an interactive tv on the back, we drove another 6 hours to go spend the weekend with Chris, Sarah, Reuben, and George in Buffalo.

Depois de caminharmos, vermos algumas lojas, e andarmos num taxi amarelo com televisao interactiva no banco de tras, conduzimos outras 6 horas para irmos passar o fim de semana em Buffalo com o Chris, Sarah, Reuben, e George.

Sabbath evening Heather and Daniel came down from Toronto for a visit. in the corner you can see George's tail.

No Sabado a tarde a Heather e o Daniel vieram desde Toronto para nos visitar. no canto podem ver a cauda do George (ele e um cao-de-agua portugues) (:

finally, Carolyn made some more concord grape juice, and somehow it was even better than last year's! these photos are from the second batch she made with Taryn.

e por fim, a Carolyn fez sumo de uva concord, ficou ainda melhor este ano que o anterior! estas fotos sao da segunda rodada que ela fez com a Taryn.

so this semester I had to work for a few hours at a 4th grade classroom as part of my practicum... at the end we had a very fast portrait session.. here goes!

este semestre tive de trabalhar algumas horas numa sala de aula de 4ª classe... no ultimo dia tivemos uma rápida sessão de retratos.. aqui vai!
